Our Social Behavior has shifted with new terms:  “Social Distancing”, “Flatten the Curve” and more.  People interact for many reasons:  Social.  Commerce. Experiences like sports and events, etc.,  A lot of that will change in the future, especially if Dr. Anthony Fauci is correct that the Coronavirus will become cyclical.

If the Coronavirus is like the Seasonal Flu, then why are Governments issuing such strict Quarantine and Shelter-In-Place Orders?

That’s one issue that I had to ask myself because I was hearing a huge spectrum of responses, concerns and opinions.  On one side was sheer panic about the Coronavirus like it is the Black Death revisited.  On the other side was that it was a Media clickbait wave and completely overblown.

But then I ask myself about the Fatality Rate from other illnesses and afflictions.   The actual statistics for the flu this year won’t be known until much later.  But I found that…

  • Flu season in the US, which runs from October through May, claims tens of thousands of lives every year. This season CDC estimates that, as of mid-March, between 29,000 and 59,000 have died due to influenza illnesses. Add to that the misery of hundreds of thousands of flu-related hospitalizations and millions of medical visits for flu symptoms this season.     Link here

In which case, when I think that there is an overreaction about the Coronavirus, my head goes to multiplying a low of 29,0000 cases x 12 months = 360,000 deaths in one year.  Sad and unfortunate but apparently a low in the range of medical opinion.  But then the article goes on to make this note from medical expert Dr. Anthony Fauci:

  • Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, put it plainly: “The seasonal flu that we deal with every year has a mortality of 0.1%,” he told the congressional panel, whereas coronavirus is “10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu,”   Link here

So the fatality rate is ten times higher.

The other issues is that the Coronavirus seems unlike the Seasonal Flu in its symptoms.   With ventilator usage, the Wuhan situation whereby bodies are overwhelming morgues and crematories, and the onslaught against traditional Emergency Rooms, the media is certainly broadcasting more and more tragedy.  So, in some part, I have to wonder if the media is overreacting.   But the manner in which a Coronavirus sadly succumbs has been written up in the news as if they were ‘drowning, dying and more’.    One patient who is 25 years old said:

  • Just 25 years old, Reed told Sky News he lost his voice from an incessant cough. He was unable to make any sounds, he added.  “It was a case of going to bed, waking up and not being able to breathe,” Reed said. “It scared me because breathing is a necessity of life. If you have the flu, you feel like you’re going to die but you’re really not. But when your lungs get affected, that’s when it really scared me.”  Link here.

So part is the effect of the Coronavirus seems a lot more grievous than the Seasonal Flu.

Worse yet is that Dr. Fauci has said that the Coronavirus could become a cyclical event much like the Seasonal Flu.  I would than that is particularly true unless this virus, like diseases such as polio, is not completely eradicated.
